Unlike manually operated valves and pressure regulators, which can function independently in throttling applications, a control valve requires integration within a control loop. This distinction underscores that while a control valve is a type of throttling valve, not all throttling valves function as control valves.

Generally, control valves are divided into four types: globe, butterfly, ball, and eccentric plug valves. Each design has specific applications, features, and advantages.
