Globe valves are primarily used for regulating flow. The design of the valve must consider the range of flow control, pressure drop, and duty to prevent premature failure and ensure satisfactory service. They are suitable for both on-off and throttling applications. Globe valves are similar to gate valves, with seats in a plane parallel or inclined to the line of flow. The most common closure element is the single-valve seat design, which operates linearly and is located in the middle of the body part.

The single-seat valve design uses a plug-seat arrangement: a linear-motion plug moves into a seat to allow low flows or closure and moves away from the seat to permit higher flows. Due to its design, a globe valve is not limited to an inherent flow characteristic like some quarter-turn valves. Globe valves are designed with a disc that moves perpendicular to the flat surface of the valve seat.
